Robert Gagnon

I do like what you have thought through here. I was born in Barcelona in Oct '35 but never lived a day there after July 16, '36. But in my emotional gut I have been affected by Spain and its political travails. What Orwell wrote about the ideological smashup that was the Spanish Civil War brings a human dimension to this ugly chapter of WWII history.

I expect that his contribution was to imagine a clearer examination of the human dimension rather than pontificate about Right vs. Left, Communism vs. capitalism et al. In a way he did the same thing about Flip and ....

But Barnes takes a lesson from Orwell in his NYROB piece about Orwell. He burrows away for the human dimension, IMHO!
